Our city. We’re just a block from renowned Telegraph Avenue, ten minutes by foot from the University of California, Berkeley, campus, rich with seminars, conferences, performances, and exhibits. Also within walking distance are the Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley Rep, Berkeley Bowl Marketplace, and eateries ranging from elegant to new-age to infinite. BART and Caltrain will take you rapidly to Oakland, San Francisco, Stanford, and Silicon Valley.

Our home. The amenities at BTH include: library, dining room, common kitchen, lounge, multimedia room, roof deck, patio, garden, laundry room, underground garage, storage rooms. Many apartments have views. Some apartments have been recently remodeled. Your fellow community members will include humanists, social scientists, engineers, statisticians, artists, authors, librarians, mental health professionals, political activists, and more. Activities include movie screenings, musical performances, discussion groups, gardening, a newsletter, and this website.
Our cooperative. BTH is a pioneer: the first senior housing cooperative in the United States. It is owned by its occupants. We are “tenant-shareholders” in a consumer cooperative corporation governed by certain local, state, and federal laws and corporate instruments. Each share gives its owner(s) occupancy of one of the 60 apartments (studio or one- or two-bedroom). Residents must generally be at least 55 years old. Other restrictions: no smoking or dogs (except service dogs). Shares are sold on the open market, and there are no income restrictions. BTH is more affordable than many senior housing developments, because it does not provide central medical, nursing, nutritional, laundering, or housekeeping services.
